9. Accept competitors as partners:
When one major player in a field declares explicitly that sustainability is a priority, it inspires others in that area to do the same. Sustainable firms enjoy this form of competition not only because it benefits the environment, but also because it encourages them to maintain their sustainability innovations. Leaders seek out like-minded competitors and non-profits with whom they might work to produce breakthroughs that would otherwise be out of reach for a single company. Leaders who are aware of their competitors’ plans should adopt important elements of their strategy as their own.
For enterprises of all sizes, mimicking global giants like Apple, which has pledged to be carbon neutral by 203018, or Salesforce, which has already achieved net-zero greenhouse gas emissions globally and provides a carbon neutral cloud. 19 Individuals and businesses, on the other hand, can start small: recycle waste, use tap water instead of plastic bottles, and make use of natural light in the office. Most of these activities are currently taking place in the workplace; how much more may be accomplished by focusing on sustainability on a regular basis? The ability of business to make a positive difference in the world is enormous. The business world is well-positioned to provide the change needed at scale, thanks to its unrivalled strengths of invention, production, and distribution.
